Longrow 21 yo Limited Release 2020

46°
Distillery : Springbank - Campbeltown
95% Sherry and 5% Bourbon Casks
Original Bottling
Limited Edition
Single Malt
Bottled in 2020
Unchillfiltered, Uncoloured
Peated around 50 ppm

Given the distillery's growing success, it was decided to release a Longrow 21yo in 2019, to support the 18yo that everyone is (understandably) clamouring for. This bottling is the 2nd edition of the 21yo, aged almost entirely in sherry casks, unlike its more balanced predecessor. It has sold 3,600 copies.

Let's Taste It :
Icing sugar. Mild smoke, set with vanilla, lemon zest and a few squirts of mirabelle plum juice. Coconut ice cream. Iodine, but very fine. Then more candied white fruits. Cane syrup. On the palate, beautiful intensity, spices, leather, yellow plums, quinces. Dried grapes. Paprika, cumin, ginger. The finish leaves me a little hungry for more, very greedy though, genoise, pastry cream, vanilla éclair, icing. Some farmhouse hints, but very discreet. Dry straw, grey earth.

In Short,
It's an excellent product, but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. The peat is very discreet, as are the distillery's hallmarks. The product is very "tame" due to its great age, the Sherry has made it very sweet, but what about the fuel oil and charcoal? I'd have to taste it again, but honestly, I think I prefer the 18 yo.
Score : 90
