Aged precisely 17 years and 3 weeks, this Dailuaine was declined 184 bottles when it came out. Dailuaine is a little-known distillery owned by Diageo, and its official bottlings are very rare, so this is an opportunity to get to know it better. 

 

 

 

Let's Taste It : 

On the nose, pastry cream, brown sugar, nougatine, yellow fruits, buttered peaches, apple crumble with a pinch of cinnamon, stuffed dates. Orchard fruits, toasted cereals, hot caramel, crème brûlée, and subtle floral notes. Suave, rich and oily on the palate, creamy vanilla, icing sugar glaze, the fruit is more discreet, overshadowed by a delicate and smooth woodiness. Subtle spices. Long, explosive finish, damp bark, dry earth, braised nuts, cashews, dried apricots, hot chestnuts, a hint of lemon zest. Candied citrus fruits.

 

In Short, 

A beautiful expression, delicious and fruity, which makes your mouth water. Ideal for accompanying desserts, such as a gourmet coffee for instance. The price is very reasonable, as is often the case with Elixir Distillers, so fans of this profile can snap it up without hesitation.

Formerly owned by its creator Ernesto Mainardi, Silver Seal passed into the hands of Massimo Righi in 2010. His company is recognised as one of the best. This Dailuaine has been aged for 14 years in an Oloroso Sherry cask, which must be a first-fill cask because the Sherry is so intense. 233 bottles came out of the cask.

 

 

 

Let's Taste It : 

A superb Sherry on the nose, very intense and elegant, cherry cream, pomegranate juice, raspberry, blackcurrant. Copper notes, perhaps a touch of sulphur, but also blood oranges, clementines, saffron and cinnamon, tomato pulp. Burnt wood, damp bark. It is oily on the palate, the fruit is rather dry, apricots, grapes, bananas, dates, but the spices arrive, tabasco, chilli and pepper. The finish is long, explosive, waxy, honeyed, royal jelly, amber, soaked leather, nougatine, heavy caramel. A few earthy hints at the end.

 

In Short, 

I read on specialist websites that there's too much Sherry in it, that it's too sweet, that there's sulphur, but I think it's excellent, as do those who have tasted it with me. Admittedly, it's very intense, and there's no doubt that you won't find the distillery's usual profile, but it's original, tasty, complex, and the finish is powerful and long. Obviously, it's not for all palates, just like very peaty whiskies. But that's exactly what I like about whisky, this extreme diversity of flavours. The good thing is that you can find it at a good price at auction.

Since 2018, Anthony McCallum has been creating ever more daring bottlings within the brand he created. Here, in The Vintage Collection range, under The Auld Alliance label, this 13-year-old Dailuaine finished in organic Pomerol casks. As for the first maturation, that remains a mystery, but a classic Bourbon barrels are very likely. 1010 bottles are on sale, it is a blending from three caskd, it seeems.

 

 

 

Let's Taste It : 

A sweet and soft wine, with a fine balance, cherries, muscat grapes that crunch under the tongue, blueberries and lingonberries but without excess. It is oily, woody, with a touch of honey and mother-of-pearl. Full and effective on the palate, between lychee and raspberry jelly, the spices are measured, not too strong. A few cashew nuts. Sufficiently long finish, earth and chocolate, orange peel, vegetal notes, moss and lichen, before ending on angelica.

 

In Short, 

It's fine, pleasant and well-balanced, not excessive like some wine barrel finishes. However, the price is outrageous. It's a nice product, but it's reduced, after all.
