Within the Càirdeas range, which means friendship in Gaelic, the
finishes are sometimes a little whimsical. Here, nothing of the kind.
Just Bourbon barrels from Maker's Mark, very famous it seems. Finally,
it's mainly because, like Laphroaig, they belong to Beam Suntory, it's
cheaper too. The set has aged for a few years, four to five years
according to the demonstrator, in the distillery's Warehouse 1, a
building that has existed for almost 200 years. No details on the number
of bottles produced, but rumours suggest something around 30,000.
It's an explosion, with the typical flavors of the distillery. Iodine,
massive peat, Bourbon but not too much, and of course the well-known
medicinal touch, an appreciable mineral side, diesel oil, fuel oil, worn
tires, car brakes, burnt rubber. Nails, scrap iron and blocks of
lignite. We still have a drizzle of vanilla and a few Mirabelle plums.
On the palate, it's creamy, whipped cream, vanilla éclair, but also
thick, marshy peat, shovelfuls of damp earth in cold weather, sea
breeze, seawater, fried fish. Very suitable spices, ginger, black
pepper, nutmeg. Brown sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar. The finish is
beautiful, long, full of punch, very charcoal-like, coffee, tannins, heather,
humus, black earth. One or two plums.
In Short,
It's the quintessential Laphroaig, a juice that may be young but has great power, with everything that makes up the brand's DNA. It's tasty, and it's so pleasant that it's like meeting up with a long-lost friend. My favourite Càirdeas, along with last year's, finished in sherry casks. The two complement each other. Yes, it's a bit expensive, but I really recommend buying it, and I intend to get round to it too, very soon.
