In February of this year, Bruichladdich's Core Range was increased by two expressions, the 18yo and the 25yo. I had to taste at least one of them. The first batch of the 18yo was distilled in 2004 from partly local and organic barley. It was triple matured to make the flavours more complex. Ageing took place on Islay itself, and the bottle was made from 60% recyclable materials.

Let's Taste It :
Fresh, light and well-balanced nose, wheat cake, cereal bar, a touch of iodine which gives a nice fullness, but softened with vanilla, a pinch of icing sugar, mandarin, almond nougatine, vergeoise. Bananas and white plums. Red fruit pastes. Very sweet on the palate, vanilla and candied fruits, light spices perfectly brought out, creamy honey. Dried lavender. Long and oily finish, gently powerful, olive oil, mirabelle plum, woody hints, varnish and glue, sugar marbles, vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate shavings.

In Short
To put it simply, it's a disappointment. The nose lacks breadth, and the finish isn't that impressive. You'd think Bruichladdich wasn't made for older expressions, but they make very good old independent bottlings. No, this is just below what we had the right to expect.
Score : 87
