A new limited edition from Kilchoman, which doesn't skimp on experimentation. Here we have a blend of 43 red wine Hogsheads, sanded, torch-burnt and charred before receiving the precious distillate. 14500 bottles were produced.
On the nose, thick red wine, quite spicy, light red fruits, like pomegranate but without the acidity. Gooseberry, dried blueberry, a hint of earth, humus, damp moss, I'm in the forest. On the palate, it's very good, still fruity, you can really feel the charring of the barrel, with charcoal, smoke, a pile of cold ash. Plastic. But the spices quickly rise, pepper and cardamom, leading to an explosive finish of tar and soot. Medium length, leaving a little tannin and cherry on the tongue.
In Short,
It's surprising, interesting and seductive. A successful experience in my opinion. The price is a bit high, but Kilchoman fans - and there are many of them - can be tempted.
