In 2018, the first 8-year-old Talisker in a long time left the distillery, on the occasion of Diageo's Special Releases. And it was a great success. Two years later, they thought it would be a good idea to repeat the formula by adding a rum cask finish to this eight-year-old, again as part of Diageo's Special Releases. And here the critics are scathing. The only thing to do in such cases is to see for yourself.
Let's Taste It :
You can clearly smell the rum barrels, icing sugar, cane syrup, vanilla and candied rhubarb. Behind, a wisp of smoke, straw fire and light tobacco. Quite pastry-like, with custard and genoise. With the addition of water, it leans towards apple, it's cidery, almost compote-like. On the palate, it lacks a bit of complexity but is soft and suave. Then the spices kick in, and it's strong: chilli, cumin, red pepper. Once the spices have calmed down a little, it's quite good and warm. The finish is again very aggressive, quite long, with vanilla, apples, raspy wood and nutmeg. Beetroot.
In Short,
I understand that there are reservations, that said, the small flaws that I found are more or less the same as in the previous 8 year old. While the nose and finish are excellent, the palate is still a little immature, but that's to be expected. It's not quite balanced, and will need a few months to air out, as with many young spirits. In my opinion, what rightly disliked this bottling was not the content but the price, which was exaggerated. It has since come down, I believe.
