It seems to have become a habit now, the release of this Private Reserve
every year, just to celebrate Christmas. The thing is that the maturation
remains secret, and it's up to the consumer to guess. But hey, it
remains obvious that these are Sherry casks, Glenfarclas never
does anything else. This edition pays tribute to the Mähler-Besse house,
with which the distillery has been collaborating for precisely 46
years, hence the mention of the anniversary. The number of copies put on
sale is exactly 9999, which is 9 more than last year's edition.
Sherry is more intense, darker, deeper, fruit cake, pudding, macerated
grapes, marzipan, panettone, coffee, dark chocolate chips. Fruit, but
not too juicy, plums, blackberries, blackcurrants. I wouldn't be
surprised if there were a few wine casks in there. It is charcoal,
earthy, humus, damp undergrowth, clearing in the forest. Mushrooms.
Palate unfortunately a little light, but sweet, candied fruits, wild
strawberries, bay leaves, well managed spices, nutmeg, cloves, cumin.
Beautiful woodiness, varnished cherry. Fairly long finish, on caramel
and genoise, pastry cream, thyme, rosemary, morello cherries,
heather.
In Short,
Very interesting this edition, it even seemed to me better than last
year's. It's a beautiful Christmas whisky, and moreover at a very fine price. The demonstrator told me it was an 8 to 10 year old. I
don't know if that's true, but it's in line with what I felt. Worth
buying in my opinion.
