The 2nd version of Octomore's 13th Batch has some interesting points in common with its comrade 13.1. Also distilled in 2016 from Concerto barley harvested on the Mainland in Scotland, the age and peat content are exactly the same. Bottling dates from March 23, 2022, exactly 8 days after 13.1. What changes is the maturation, here the liquid has aged entirely in first fill Oloroso Sherry casks from the Fernando de Castilla brand, based in Jerez in Andalusia. The number of bottles produced is not specified and the sale was made in October of this year.

Let's Taste It :
The Sherry is intense from the start, very dark and fruity, with crushed blueberries and liquorice, tinder, tree bark, blood oranges, blackberries, blackcurrants, and at the same time tar, hot asphalt, fuel oil, coal. Notes of Arabica coffee. The peat remains in the background, quite earthy, giving the whole a fuller character. Bewitching smoke. Creamy on the palate, red fruit syrup, gooseberries, raspberries, muscat grapes. Coffee grounds. There's a slight woodiness that's very pleasant. The spices are intense, ginger, paprika, curry, nutmeg. Forest berries. Long, deep finish, black earth, charcoal, fruity aftertaste, liquorice returns, with a nice uppercut of peat in retro-olfaction. Herbaceous touches that slowly fade. Burnt hay. Chicory.

In Short,
This is an excellent bottling, which focuses on an intense, very fruity, deep Sherry. It reminds me of the 08.2, but more measured, with more body. A great Octomore vintage, which is a must-have if you're a fan of the genre, despite a dissuasive price tag. Unfortunately, it runs out fairly quickly. You'd better hurry.
