The Michter's distillery dates back to before the independence of the United States. It is believed to be the oldest distillery in operation, but that's what the legend says. The historical reality is that the stills and warehouses actually come from the 1840s, although documents show that spirits have been produced here since 1753. What's more, this particular distillery has been closed since 1989. There is a Michter's Distillery in operation, but it is located on another site, in Louisville, and has only been producing since 2015. As a result, this 10yo Single Barrel cannot come from either of the group's two distilleries, as its juice in fact was distilled in an officially unknown distillery. But there is a very strong probability that this Rye Whiskey comes from Brown Foreman Distillery, also located in Louisville, a few hundred metres from the new Michter's Distillery, and which produces Jack Daniel's, among others.

Let's Taste It :
Very sweet, with icing sugar, great fullness, candied fruits, a hint of molasses, creamy and round, lively spices, cloves and nutmeg, cane sugar, a trace of smoke. In the background, the cereals are rough, rye of course, but also buckwheat, spelt and ploughed earth. On the palate, the cereals take over, dark bread, toffee, but also vanilla, blood orange and lime, before fairly strong spices, pepper and cumin. The finish is long and pleasant, with chestnut, tree bark and heather. More cloves and salted butter caramel.

In Short,
It's extremely well made. They get their supplies from another distillery, but the recipe has been the same for decades, and there's undeniable expertise here. Of course, quality like this quickly became obvious, and today each batch fetches a high price. That's a shame. It's a very good Rye, but the finish isn't exceptional, it's not worth the price it's sold for.
Score : 88
