In the modern whisky industry, Teaninich, founded en 1817, is mostly used for Blends. And it's a shame, because it's a very special distillery, they have a hammer mill and a mash filter, the only one operative in Scotland. It produces a clear wort, and heavily influences the whisky's nature: it is flagrant and floral, bringing to mind a freshly cut grassy field in springtime. That's why this distillery has a real personality and is underestimated. Fortunately we have a few independent bottlings to enjoy it in, this one has been finished in Sauternes Casks for three years, enhancing the sweetness of the distillate. No clue about the first maturation and the nmber of bottles produced, but at least it's not chill-filtered.
Let's Taste It :
Almonds, walnuts, hot chocolate, vegetable moss, grassy fragrances, bay leaf. It's indeed floral, somewhere between jasmine and rose or maybe primrose, but it's not overpowering. It remains pleasant, light but not too much. The palate is slightly acidic, with orchard fruits, green apples and Comice pears, spices under control. Slightly sweet. Cinnamon and nutmeg. The finish is long, but not violent, heather, chicory, caramel, fig pulp. Cashew nuts. Tannins.
In Short,
It's interesting, the Sauternes is not very persistent, but it gives the distillate a richer profile. Having said that, there are a few flaws too, but it remains a good whisky, smooth, subtle and light, with a hint of oak. The price may seem exaggerated.
