This is the 9th edition of the Octomore .3 series. Like the others, it is made from Concerto barley grown on Islay at Octomore Farm, Village and Lorgba Fields. It was partly aged in Wine Casks, like the 07.3, the 08.3, the 09.3 and the 13.3, during 5 years. No clue about the number of the bottles produced.
Let's Taste It :
On the nose, wood and cereals, drowned in an intense, thick, lumpy peat, but it still seems balanced to me. A touch of iodine, toasted vanilla, some discreet fruits, grapes ready to burst, muscat, italia, chasselas, pears, kumquats. Weather-softened oak bark, rich milky cereals, porridge. Rose petals, becoming a little floral at the end. The palate is very pleasant, mellow, fluffy, squeaky leather, vanilla-flavoured soya milk, passion fruit, peaches and quinces, not-so-exuberant spices, paprika and nutmeg. Candied apricots. The finish is destructive, of course, very long, the wood returns with reeds and thick, boggy peat. Litchi, earth, heather, humus, chestnuts, cloves.
In Short,
It's a success, in the same vein as the 08.3, but not as good, with a nice influence from the wine casks that gives it a floral touch despite the extremely powerful peat. It's quite sweet, which brings to mind the 09.3, but this time it's better. The 09.3 is a little too sweet for my taste, but this one's fine. So this is a lovely Octomore, but the price has gone up quite a bit, so I'm not sure it's still worth buying, not for me anyway.
