Union Distillery was founded in 1948 in the Serra Gaùcha, region of Brazil. First they were producing wine, but from 1972 they only produce whisky. Most of their production is young, between 5 and 8 years old, except for this one, 16 years old in Bourbon Casks. It's a limited edition of 2000 bottles, only available at the distillery shop.
Let's Taste It :
Honey and old wood, candied lemon, a dash of vanilla, lots of cinnamon. Baked greengages, grilled corn, maple syrup, toffee just before burning, treacle, hot chestnuts. Very pleasant, slightly sweet floral notes. On the palate, the fruit is more present, enhanced by a spoonful of icing sugar, lime, juicy pears, and some very well-integrated spices, cloves, pepper. The finish is long and very woody, with a touch of liquorice, vinous undertones, milk chocolate and cola.
In Short,
It's really interesting, because it's very original. It has the mark of American Whisky, but it's also tropical, a profile seen nowhere else. I even thought of Kavalan. But, unlike Kavalan, it's well-aged and therefore complex and subtle. It would be a very good thing if it were marketed in Europe, provided that the price remains acceptable, of course.
