Every year, Gordon & MacPhail release over 100 bottlings, including some extremely rare examples and numerous curiosities. This one, for example, stands out straight away as it is a Glentauchers matured in a refill bourbon cask, which is relatively rare. Furthermore, it has an interesting age of 16 years, still possessing the impetuosity of youth, yet already displaying the first hints of great maturity. That is why it is well worth a taste. There are 253 bottles available.
It is both fruity and briny. A gentle, smooth fruitiness, slightly waxy, at times pulpy, mirabelle plums, bananas, white grapes, perhaps with a slightly exotic touch. The fleeting freshness of the iodine, subtle, with a modest and mineral elegance. All this is beautifully balanced, with a few cereal-like nuances. On the palate, it is velvety, juicy pears and lemon zest blending with a delicate roughness, barley, unprocessed grain. Very discreet spices. A very well-crafted finish, lasting just long enough, dried pineapple and heather honey, crushed wheat, a pinch of cinnamon.
In Short,
I really liked this one. For a start, it’s original, you don’t come across many Glentauchers in Bourbon Refill casks, and what’s more, it’s really well made. It has everything you’d expect from a whisky of this type at this age, luscious white fruits, a hint of sea salt, cereal notes, citrus, but not too much, and a touch of exoticism. It’s the sort of excellence that only Gordon & MacPhail can deliver, from a distillery whose reputation isn’t exactly at its peak. What’s more, the price is very reasonable.
