Bourbon Barrels and Ex-Moscatel Finish
Original Bottling
Limited Edition
Single Malt
Bottled in 2018
Peated around 35 ppm
Every year since 2006, Caol Ila has released this vintage edition, finished in Moscatel casks, a sweet white wine from Portugal.
Let's Taste It :
First, the sensation of sniffing a rail of cold ash. Then iodine, salt, caramel, red fruits and leather. Then, if you insist, some white fruits, grapes, candied lemon and mirabelle plum, which no doubt come from the Moscatel cask finish. Smoke binds it all together. On the palate, it's suave, woody and mellow, fresh, the peat is barely noticeable, it's very fruity, vanilla, citrus, orange and grapefruit. The ash returns in the finish, which is very long, charcoal, dark chocolate and smoke. You can really smell the white wine in retro-olfaction, it's sweet like Sauternes, a little more would be too much. But this is perfect.
In Short,
A truly excellent edition, the peat is made more complex by maturation in wine casks, without losing any of its intensity. A must-have classic.
