In 2009, Laphroaig decided to release an annual cask strength edition of its 10 Year Old. This Batch is the very first in a long series, and one of the most highly regarded.
Let's Taste It :
What an intensity of smoke and nails. You'd think you were at the scrapyard. Quite a lot of coarse salt but not too much iodine. The peat is rising. Soot, charcoal, lignite, it coats the nostrils. Really fine balance, extremely smooth despite the atypical aromas. A hint of vanilla. Smoke again, thick, dizzying. Asphalt still fresh. On hot days, when it seems to melt. With that, a bit of earth and holly. Prickly heather. Oak leaves, acorns. And the smoke comes back again, it's endless.
On the palate, motor oil, peat, strong spices. Apricot juice, fuel oil, pebbles, coke. Stretto coffee and very dark chocolate. Finish not immensely long but very earthy, cola, sage, cranberry, liquorice. Slightly dry wood. Guérande salt, just out of the marsh.

In Short,
A stern, oiled peat, with vegetal notes and very light vanilla. Of course, this first Batch is now unaffordable, but it has rightly become a legend.
