Rachel Barrie herself has selected 10 casks, which she has included in the Coastal Casks collection. These 10 casks will each produce 10 expressions typical of the distillery, to celebrate its rebirth in 2008. Here we have a cask of Oloroso Sherry Puncheon (I don't know what Puncheon means), cask no. 957, of which 685 were bottled.

Let's Taste It :
Nice mineral and limestone intensity to start with. It's almost fruity, with vanilla and apricot, then so earthy that it's rancid, gypsum, clay, gravel and sea salt. Then come the depth and mellowness of Oloroso, with red fruits blending delicately with minerality and iodine, cranberries, gooseberries and a touch of raspberry. Some charcoal and wood fragrances. The palate is very deep and intense, more quinces and walnuts than red fruits. The earthiness is still very powerful. Finally, the finish is robust, a slap in the face, with varnished wood, cinnamon and saffron. Very nice. Dusty at the end.

In Short,
Really very good, especially the nose, full of character, and the Sherry which adds its touch without taking anything away. Not far from superb. The price is a bit high, but it's a Single Cask, so there's really nothing to complain about. This bottling reveals the distillery's enormous potential, and it would be great if they could get their act together and finally offer us something sufficiently aged and eloquent in the regular range.
Score : 89
