Original Bottling
Core Range
Single Malt
Launched in 2016
Unchillfiltered
Totally Unpeated
It's hard to believe that the prestigious Glen Moray distillery didn't have an 18 year old before 2016, but it seems to be the case. It's not the most venerable expression in the Core Range, as there is a 21 year old.
Let's Taste It :
Creamy, woody, very sweet nose. Lemon candy, vanilla éclair, enhanced by light spices, paprika, pepper, nutmeg. Quite rustic, with orchard fruits, apples and pears, and some cooked vegetables. The palate is suave and unctuous, with spices followed by honey, almonds and chocolate croissant, reminiscent of a good bakery, with the smell of pastry warming up. The finish is not very long, but pleasant, with cereals, wheat, puffed rice and malted barley. Dry earth and heather. Ferns.
In Short,
It's a good whisky, but frankly light in flavour and character for an 18-year-old. The influence of the first-fill bourbon casks somewhat erases the identity of the distillery. I think this is the weakest 18 year old single malt I've ever tasted. That said, the price isn't excessive, so enthusiasts may be in for a treat.
