Glenfarclas 12 Year Old must have appeared in the early 1970s. In fact, the distillery was one of the first to offer aged Single Malts in mass distribution, and its production doubled in 1960 after the addition of two new stills. So I'm guessing it was a dozen years after the launch of this expression, which is now an irremovable part of the Scotch whisky landscape, occured. Anyway, it is certain that it existed in 1973. At the time, it was limited to travel retail, which is no longer the case today. The bottle's current design dates from 2010. Maturation is 100% in Oloroso Sherry casks, but only 25% in first-fill casks, it seems, so the Sherry is not as striking as you might think.
Let's Taste It :
Cherry cream. Aged blackberries. We're in the forest, there's a certain humidity, it's leafy, but there are conifers too, it's slightly minty, hazelnuts, chestnuts, resin, tree bark, light honey, ferns, heather, loose earth. Redcurrants and other berries. On the palate, some spices, it's quite good, fruitcake, paprika, cardamom, nutmeg. Baked apples. The finish is not bad, on charcoal, dry wood, a little rough but quite long. A touch of candied ginger. Fir thorns.
In Short,
It's all very interesting. This is an excellent aperitif whisky. It is warm and friendly, without being too original or aggressive to upset the middle-class drinker. The price is very fair, a purchase would be appropriate.
Score : 84
