This is another of those distilleries that are both well-known and unknown. Well-known because all lovers of blended whisky drink it without knowing it, and unknown because no Original Bottling Single Malt is currently on the market. It is one of the main ingredients in Ballantine's and Black and White, two blends that are easy to find in supermarkets. As for single malts, there are relatively few independent bottlings, of which we have one here in a reduced version. Aged in two casks, one Sherry and the other Bourbon Firkin (a tiny cask, from 38 to 45 litres), the whole production totals just 117 bottles, which doesn't seem like much to me for a two-cask blend, especially if it's reduced.
A fine blend, dominated by Sherry but harmonious, very mellow, very round, red fruits, cherries, muscat grapes, with just the right amount of earth, a hint of vanilla, blueberries, forest berries. Rich, damp, undergrowth, slightly vegetal. In contrast, the palate seems rather simple, smoother, but still fruity, on amarena, in duo with conference pears bathed in melted chocolate, a certain darkness, spices, paprika, cumin, nutmeg. The finish is long and very successful, dark, earthy, almost smoky, peppery, thick, blood orange and tree leaf, chestnut, oak.
In Short,
You can definitely smell the sherry, but it's counterbalanced by the
profile of the distillery, typical of Speyside and by some bourbonnesque character. I found it very nice, very pleasant, and with a certain personality. It's a little pricey for what it is, but fans of Speyside and Sherry can be tempted.
