The Bere Barley is an old kind of barley that fell into disuse decades (or maybe centuries) ago. The experts at Bruichladdich have taken an interest in it, and since 2012 a more or less annual edition has been released, very often of a different age. This grain has a lower yield, but offers an exceptional concentration of flavours. The grain used to produce this bottling was grown by the Institute of Agronomy at Orkney College.

Let's Taste It :
It's creamy and very cerealy. It's crispy, like biting into a grain of barley. The caress of the ear. Sanded wood. A touch of iodine. Fresh vanilla, green fruits, greengages, Granny Smith apples, a mint leaf. Full, unctuous, round palate, vanilla yoghurt with lemon zest. Muesli with dried raisins. Very light spices, an ounce of nutmeg. Long, pleasant finish, but not quite explosive, still cereal-like, cut hay, lemon, dry earth, cola nut, wild herbs. Varnish.

In Short,
It's original and very well done. It's both pastry and very cerealy, farmy, with a deep authenticity. A must-have, if only out of curiosity. You'll have to look hard, because depending on the site, the price can almost double.
Score : 86
