Rolf Kaspar is a collaborator of Adelphi in Germany, and in 2012 he set up a trading company in his own name, he has produced around 75 bottlings, 27 of them under the Black Corbie series. This cask 10507 was distilled on 16 October 2013 and bottled on 25 April 2019. It contained highly peated Bunnahabhain Staoisha, at least 40 ppm, but probably more. Before bottling, the cask was split in two. The first part was finished in a Port cask from the French cooperage Radoux, and the other, the one we're interested in, was finished for 8 months in a cask of Amarone wine from the same brand. The result was 311 bottles that flooded the market, but were soon sold out.
Thick peat, filthy smoke, coal black. Gravel. Graphite. It's stifling. After a while, it becomes slightly mellow. Candied grapes, quince jam, but you have to say it quickly. Burnt wood, forest fire. A carpet of ashes. It is more balanced towards the end. On the palate, the ashes are chewed, followed by a little wineiness and acidity. Finally the spices, and it turns velvety. Dried banana, gooseberry, blackcurrant. Intense finish, brown coal, black earth, nutmeg, a bit herbaceous. 90% cocoa chocolate. Stretto coffee. Spongy wood.
In Short,
A concentrated black smoke, with a few timid winey notes. It's very good, but only for die-hard fans. The release price was OK, but now it's impossible to find it anywhere.
Score : 88
