It is a historic moment, the distillery finally introducing an expression with an official age statement, and what an age! 16 Years Old is quite simply the distillery's oldest whisky. It is a combination of 21 casks, which produced 5,000 bottles, most of them Bourbon barrels.

Let's Taste It :
On the nose, spices and honey, pungent sherry, quince and apricot jam, soft, grainy smoke. Gold flakes and candied vanilla, the Bourbon is there too. Very well done and fairly balanced. On the palate, sucking candy, dried fruits, soft caramel. Dates, bananas, figs, hints of leather, spices, nutmeg, cardamom, mustard. The finish is long and even explosive, a bit earthy, humus invades the taste buds and spreads, truffles, dark chocolate, coffee grounds. Charcoal, forest berries.

In Short,
A truly excellent Kilchoman, with a well-balanced nose, a silky, sweet palate and a magnificent finish. I'm tempted to say that this is a really outstanding whisky, but it's only a very successful 16yo, let's say it's about the same level as the Caol Ila 18yo, with a little more power. And it's the price that's the problem, because it's sold as something extraordinary, at the price of a 20/25 year old. It's a shame.
Score : 89
