It's the eternal return of Loch Gorm, this year marks its 11th edition. As always, it's aged entirely in Sherry casks, and this time 22 casks were used, all of them of Oloroso Sherry, at least that's what I was told, resulting in 18,000 bottles. The 8 most recent casks were distilled in 2015, but 8 others were distilled in 2013 and the last 6 in 2014. Loch Gorm is Islay's largest lake, located close to the distillery.
Let's Taste It :
Plums, damsons, blackcurrants, blackberries, greengages, you think of Port. Behind, beautiful, oily, charcoal peat. Burnt wood, lignite, soot. Blueberry jam. It's well balanced. The palate is both light and deep, the fruits are light, evanescent, ethereal, like a cloud of fruits, and the peat is deep, marshy, earthy, full of humus and vegetal moss. The spices are rich, nutmeg, saffron, intense, cumin, black pepper. Fleshy, meaty finish, grilled bacon, viandox sauce. Then back to the earth and peat, with gooseberries and cranberries.
In Short,
It's as good as the series, we're not disappointed. This one seems a little fruitier than the others I've tasted, but a little younger too, with a certain candour. The peat is not so present. As for the price, it's gone up again, far too much for what it is in my opinion.
