This Ledaig aged 16 years and 8 months in a second-fill Hogshead is being sold exclusively by La Maison du Whisky in Paris. The 303 bottles that make up this batch will therefore be reserved for customers of this prestigious store. Although it is highly probable that this whisky is Cask Strength, this is not certain, as the range bottles its juices at 'optimum strength', as they themselves write on their website, but not necessarily Cask Strength.
The nose is fairly consensual, even nice and welcoming. It's not what you'd expect from a Ledaig, the lemon is polished, the peat isn't extravagant, it's not dirty or overrun with burnt plastic. However, it's definitely a Ledaig, it's clearly recognisable, but the rubber blends very well with the white fruits, the peat just enhances the fragrances, everything is in its place. It's balanced and round. The palate is waxy, on a bed of ashes, but also greedy, with whipped cream and pistachio macaroons. The spices are disciplined. The finish is spicy, long and yet explosive, a little farmy, a little foresty, a little iodised. Humus, chestnuts and damp earth, iodine and a dash of salt. Hay.
In Short,
I can say that it's very well done, but, coming from a Ledaig, I'd prefer it to be more rustic, more violent, more wobbly. This will certainly appeal to a lot of people, but perhaps not to Ledaig fans, of which I am one, who expect more incorrect flavours. The price seems high to me, I have to accept the current evolution of the market, but it's difficult. It's a good whisky for those who don't know too much about the brand, and don't want to be heckled too much by the profile, but are prepared to pay a certain price already.
