Made from Concerto and Propino barley harvested on eight different farms (Cruach, Craigens, Island Farm, Dunlossit, Coull, Rockside, Sunderland and Mulindry), all located on the island within 15 miles of the distillery, this new vintage of Islay Barley, the 5th I believe, has undergone a relatively original triple maturation, mainly in Bourbon casks, with a small proportion in virgin and French wine casks.

Let's Taste It :
Velvety, silky, slightly fruity nose, ethereal iodine, varnished wood, blackberries and cherries, a touch of liquorice. A pinch of salt. White fruits and vanilla in the background. The peat is thick but engaging, not at all aggressive. Rather bewitching, it blends well with the wood. The palate is pleasant, fruitier, on a layer of ash and smoke. Blueberry tart, blackcurrant berries. Quite decent spices. The finish is long and fairly explosive, with charcoal, ivy, humus and crushed chestnuts. Chocolate fondant.

In Short,
Port Charlotte Islay Barleys come and go, and it's hard to define the differences between them. However, I find this one a little less successful than the previous ones I've tasted, mainly because I didn't smell the exotic fruits. But that's just an impression, I'd have to do a line-up of the series to be sure. The fact remains that this is a very well-made product, pleasant and interesting to drink, but for the same price, the 10 year old is superior.
Score : 87
