It's a rather crazy project that has been launched by Livingstone, a young whisky trading company created by Alexis Livingstone Burgess: to design a specific bottling for each character in 'Macbeth', William Shakespeare's famous play, a tragedy in five acts, and one of the summits of the English language. The first delivery dates from early 2023 and includes nine characters. In the end, there will be 42 characters in all, as in the famous Scottish play, and as many bottles. Lvingstone didn't have the resources to pull off such a tour de force, so Elixir Distillers decided to bring this madness to life, and all the whiskies used come from their warehouses. Here, an 18-year-old Ledaig matured in Bourbon casks represents the First Murderer, the man who killed Banquo but let his son escape, in Act III of the play. This blend of Bourbon casks produced 1,200 bottles. The label was designed by the famous illustrator Sir Quentin Blake.
Let's Taste It :
Waxy and peaty nose, dry, mineral peat, fresh iodine, limestone, burnt plastic, elastic, rubber, olive oil, pinch of salt, slate, quartz. Some very discreet maritime hints. A drop of vanilla. On the palate, the white fruits stand out, it's silky, but behind, you can smell the peat and the tide, seaweed, mud, kelp, a zest of lemon. The spices are restrained. Long finish, cloves, coffee, dark chocolate, an ounce of earth, chicory, liquorice, salted butter caramel. Chestnuts.
In Short,
An oily and subtle Ledaig, but quite gentle and quiet. It's probably the age, but I've had Ledaig that were just as old and more aggressive. This will appeal to those who prefer a tamed Ledaig, while I prefer it more violent. The price is high, but the marketing budget must be substantial. This really is a collector's item.
