Originally launched as a Committee Release, this high proof edition quickly became part of the regular range. Rumour has it that it is a blend of whiskies aged for around 10 years in American Bourbon casks, and 6 to 7 years in virgin Limousin oak casks. But a few casks of Burgundy wine are also used. The name comes from a famous and particularly dangerous whirlpool found in the north of the Isle of Islay.
Let's Taste It :
The peat rises to the nose like a blast. Thick smoke, iodine, ash, a hint of camphor, ether. With the addition of water, vanilla emerges. The whole is very well balanced and slightly spicy. On the palate, it's still very peaty, with pepper, cloves, oil, an ounce of lemon and hints of herbs that come through strongly in the thundering, long finish. I find some chicory in the aftertaste. It's less subtle than the Uigeadail, closer in flavour to the Ten, but much more powerful and complex.
In Short,
Deep, intense peat with no frills. This is a prestige edition that should be purchased without the slightest hesitation, as it offers excellent value for money.
