This is the second bottling from the 5th batch of the Artist Collective range launched by La Maison du Whisky in 2017. It's a Bunnahabhain Staoisha, because the water used for the whisky comes from Lake Staoisha. And the casks used are Dechar/Rechar, which means that they have been sanded and then re-burnt, making them look as good as new, more or less. The label features a work by artist Mara Surleau, entitled 'Glass'.
Very mineral nose, limestone, sea salt, granite. Waves breaking on the rocks. Gypsum stalactites. Subterranean humidity. Heady smoke, maritime peat. Foam, sea spray, kelp. Fuel oil, like on a trawler. Mud and seaweed. On the palate, thick peat, spices, pepper, cumin, ginger. A dash of vanilla, some white fruits, plums, pears, not so ripe. Long, destructive finish, with charcoal and black earth. Gravel, nails. Pine thorns, eucalyptus, nutmeg. Forest undergrowth. Heather, ferns.
In Short,
This is a very good Staoisha, well peated, mineral and still quite subtle. The intense spices come from the fresh wood, but at the same time there are the distillery's hallmarks. The price is high, but not outrageous. A purchase may be considered.
