The Janot distillery has launched this Blended, the originality of which lies in the fact that it is made from organic barley..

Let's Taste It :
Pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, melon, combined with fairly fresh vanilla. Mint leaf. Cereals, more wheat than barley it seems. In the background, a touch of earth and whitewash. It's sweet overall. On the palate, honey, vanilla and a hint of white grapes. Cane sugar. A few spices. The finish is not unpleasant, but light, short and a little astringent. Puffed rice and cola seeds. Frankly, at this price you can buy a good daily dram, preferably in summer.

In Short,
A Blended that's better than the other you usually find in supermarkets. Or so it seemed to me.

12,000 copies of this 3rd edition of Octomore 10 Years went on sale in early 2019..

Let's Taste It :
Superb balance between the American casks, which offer light white fruits, mirabelle plums, greengages, and vanilla that's not at all sweet, and the port casks, with their red fruits, wineiness, pomegranate, blackcurrant, tannins, heather earth, undergrowth, humus, lemon zest, smoke, exotic fruits, lychees, iodine, foam, sea salt, damp sand. I spent half an hour smelling the glass. Very complex palate, torn between peat and a fruity, forest intensity. Deep, interminable finish, black earth, charcoal, muscat grapes. I could still taste it twenty minutes later.

In Short,
Exquisite. The most complex nose I've ever smelt, and the rest is equal to it. A bottle to get hold of as soon as possible if you can afford it.

Torfa means "peat" in Old Norse, the Scandinavian language used by the Vikings in the 14th century.

Let's Taste It :
Grainy peat, not invasive or boring, but which enhances the fruits and the slightly iodised flavour. Fresh pear, juicy apple, some exotic fruits, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit. A hint of dried coconut. Intermittent floral fragrances. On the palate, relatively light but nevertheless pleasant, with vanilla and cane sugar. Discreet spices, nutmeg and cloves, a dash of limestone. A pleasant finish, reminiscent of tart tatin. Flambéed meringue and candied lemon.

In Short,
It's a pleasant surprise. It's not revolutionary, but the combination of exotic fruits and peat without excess is interesting. However, the price is a bit high in my opinion.

This is the first expression created after the reopening of the distillery, which had been closed for over twenty years.

Let's Taste It :
Brown sugar melted in hot milk. Fern and heather. Ounce of iodised lemon. The malted barley is imposing, followed by a floral wave of violets, poppies and chrysanthemums. A hint of pear, not too juicy. Quite pleasant. On the palate, still floral, with a touch of apricot and caramel. Bark, damp sand. Light and a bit young, with expressive spices, cinnamon and pepper. Pleasant finish, but no more than that, nectarine and pipe tobacco. Grainy aftertaste. Wheat, barley, millet.

In Short,
It's not bad, and the double maturation is quite elegant. But the distillate is still too young and the palate light, which is a shame.

Created to replace the Laddie Ten shortly after Rémy Cointreau acquired the distillery, the first edition had Scottish Barley written in bold. In 2015, The Classic Laddie became the main name, with Scottish Barley as the subtitle.

Let's Taste It :
First, sea iodine, coarse salt, a hint of astringency, a slight bourbon influence with vanilla and a pastry note, brown sugar, crème brûlée, yeast, then the fruits reveal themselves, lemonade, strawberry chewing gum, minty freshness, lavender, a few spices, Provençal herbs, grass cut in the rain. On the palate, mint leaf, basil, white plum, vanilla bean, but it remains fairly smooth and ends in a rather pleasant, refreshing, long and biscuity finish, on puffed rice.

In Short,
A friendly, original and light expression, often underestimated. It's not exactly a classic, but it's worth getting your hands on one, especially in summer.

Following the success of the first edition, John Glaser is launching a 2nd No Name, this time based on Caol Ila and Talisker. 8802 bottles were produced.

Let's Taste It :
Very fruity peat. Apple, but above all pear, apricot, white grape, plum and a zest of lemon. Comice pear, very juicy, just ripe, you lick the juice off your fingers. Fine, grainy smoke. Charcoal, fairly strong iodine. The tide, the sea air. Foam. Pinch of salt. Wet sand, heather. Slightly pastry-like, vanilla, salted butter macaroon, almond powder.
Very fruity on the palate too, with more vanilla and salted butter, pecans, cashew nuts, dates, delicately sprinkled spices, white pepper, sage, chives. Milk chocolate finish, varnished mahogany wood, Armenian paper, earthy aftertaste. Coconut with its shell.

In Short,
It's hard to say which is the better of the two No Name editions. This one is much fruitier and less coaly than the previous one. In both cases, the price is a bit high, but you won't be disappointed if you can afford it.

The illustrious Master Blender John Glaser, founder of Compass Box, is bringing us his most peaty edition, made from a blend of casks from 5 different distilleries. No name is given, as the brochure says the whisky must speak for itself. But we do know that 15,000 bottles are available.

Let's Taste It :
Very Ardbeg on the nose, powerful black smoke combined with ample, vegetal peat. Then white fruits, citrus. A hint of cherry, salt and iodine, I imagine it's Caol Ila. Tidal. The candle wax/camphor flavour from Clynelish is barely noticeable. The palate is light and nuanced, quite Highlands, raisin cake, then the pepper rises, coarse salt, seaweed. Finish not too explosive but very long, tobacco, dark chocolate, spices, cardamom, cigar ash. Heather earth.

In Short,
I loved the nose and the finish, which are excellent, but I have to say that I found the palate a tiny bit sub-par. It's still a very good product, incredibly subtle, but at a rather high price, especially now that it's so hard to find.

The 3rd version of the 10th batch in the Octomore series has been aged in American casks from the Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace and Jack Daniel's distilleries. It is made from Concerto barley grown on the distillery's farm. It is a limited edition of 24,000 units. The idea is to give it exactly the same maturation as the 10.1, only the barley is different, to show everyone just how much the terroir plays a part in the whisky's profile.

Let's Taste It :
Very earthy nose, peat storm, cereals, floral, which gives on to juicy apples, rather golden smith but very ripe, white grapes, vanilla in the background, a slight nuance of spices and herbs, something rather tropical too, in monsoon season, banana leaves, mangroves, very thick mud. Finishes with a hint of minerality. Very dense on the palate, with a variety of flavours ranging from marzipan to mineral water, vanilla and a touch of lemon. The white fruits take over and give the peat its fullness, and finally there's the finish, like a tidal wave, iodine, rock, tar. Wow!

In Short,
This version is excellent, I found it much better than the 10.1, which goes to show where the barley comes from is important for the quality of the product. It's still very balanced and nuanced, a far cry from the classic Peat Bomb. On the palate, however, I found it a little beneath my expectations. The price is still disproportionate, it should be reserved for die-hard fans.

The first version of the 10th batch of the Octomore series has been matured in American casks from Jim Beam, Jack Daniel's, Buffalo Trace and Sky Hill. This is a limited edition of 42,000 bottles.

Let's Taste It :
Marsh peat, white fruits, charcoal, very delicate vanilla, fresh mint. Mud, reeds, bamboo, eucalyptus. Cane sugar. Cut grass. Very balanced. White plums, mirabelles, crushed vanilla pods. Mustard seeds. Intense on the palate, very oily, argan nuts, sweet olives. Liquid honey, watercress, knob of butter. Shaking spices, cloves, black pepper, nutmeg. Quite violent finish, resonating in the mouth, fresh. Sage, zucchini flower, aniseed. Very full, quite vegetal.

In Short,
It's very good, and superbly balanced, which is quite surprising. However, although the experience was very interesting, I find that the value for money is not there.

Since 2013, Bruichladdich has been releasing this vintage edition every year, made entirely on Islay. This one, the 6th batch, is made from Oxbridge and Publican barley grown on Dunlossit, Kilchiaran and Sunderland farms.

Let's Taste It :
The nose is clean peat, fairly grainy, crisp and sharp. Vegetal and leafy touches, ferns, heather earth. Less fruity than the 10-year-old. Earth, tar, plastic, but also cereals, corn, and a rather sweet pastry note, brown sugar, almond paste, genoise. All the same, it's the peat that dominates by far. It is also present on the palate, which is thick, but more complex and pleasant, grapes, quince and apricot compote, peppermint. The finish is very good, earth and charcoal, liquorice and eucalyptus.

In Short,
A tasty expression, more smoky and coaly than the 10yo, but I must admit that I preferred the latter. That said, why not give it a try for a change, provided you can find the right bottle at the right price.

Since 2010, Bruichladdich has regularly released a vintage edition made from organic barley, without the use of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers. This is the 8th vintage, produced in 18,000 units, and the barley was harvested on Islay at Mid Coul Farm.

Let's Taste It :
Cereals, slightly damp earth, a few weeds, limestone, it's like caressing humus, barley swaying in the wind, a grain of wheat, a tree leaf tearing under your hand. A field in wet weather. A very peasant profile, little peasant. Light plums. On the palate, very honeyed, just a hint of lemon and vanilla, white fruits, nice spices, nutmeg, cardamom, turmeric, dry on the finish, then once again earthy, leafy, vegetal, deep, almost charcoal. Clay. Acorns, tree bark.

In Short,
A superb, very herbal nose, and honey on the palate. A great success, a little more expensive than the Islay Barley but well worth it.

From 2012 onwards, Bruichladdich decided to release an annual vintage edition made from a special 6-row barley, also known as escourgeon. Common barley has only two rows. This is the 8th Bere Barley batch.

Let's Taste It :
This time the barley is spicy, almost seasoned. And the lemon is very present, but a candied, citrusy lemon, with blood orange, spices, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. The earthiness is in the background, with the cereal profile typical of the distillery, but it comes through on the palate, almost astringent, mineral, barely attenuated by some white fruits, then the spices rise, and it's a rather strong finish, fertiliser, coal, dust. Chocolate and earth.

In Short,
A slightly more earthy and cerealy profile than the Islay Barley, but apart from that, nothing exceptionally original. The fact remains that this is a typical expression of the distillery and you shouldn't hesitate to buy one from time to time.

Bruichladdich has been bringing out this vintage edition annually since 2012, produced with barley grown on Islay. Here, the barley comes from six different farms, and this is the 7th Islay Barley Batch.

Let's Taste It :
Like the Classic Laddie, it starts with a hint of astringency, then the cereals emerge, but it's also very fruity, with melon, grapes, mango, an ounce of lemon and vanilla to support it all. There's a touch of earthiness and quicklime, and the balance is struck between sweetness and earth. On the palate, it's creamy, delicate, quite pastry-like, easy-drinking, almost floral, it's like drinking rosewater. It goes down smoothly, and the finish is long and slightly mentholated, aniseed-flavoured, with a touch of earth and chives.

In Short,
Once again, a very interesting expression, both gourmand and cereal-like. Don't hesitate to buy one.

In 2009, Laphroaig decided to release an annual cask strength edition of its 10 Year Old. This Batch is the very first in a long series, and one of the most highly regarded.

Let's Taste It :
What an intensity of smoke and nails. You'd think you were at the scrapyard. Quite a lot of coarse salt but not too much iodine. The peat is rising. Soot, charcoal, lignite, it coats the nostrils. Really fine balance, extremely smooth despite the atypical aromas. A hint of vanilla. Smoke again, thick, dizzying. Asphalt still fresh. On hot days, when it seems to melt. With that, a bit of earth and holly. Prickly heather. Oak leaves, acorns. And the smoke comes back again, it's endless.
On the palate, motor oil, peat, strong spices. Apricot juice, fuel oil, pebbles, coke. Stretto coffee and very dark chocolate. Finish not immensely long but very earthy, cola, sage, cranberry, liquorice. Slightly dry wood. Guérande salt, just out of the marsh.

In Short,
A stern, oiled peat, with vegetal notes and very light vanilla. Of course, this first Batch is now unaffordable, but it has rightly become a legend.

Since 2008, Laphroaig has released an annual edition of this Càirdeas (which means 'friendship' in Gaelic) at the time of Feis Ile, Islay's famous music festival. Each time, the distillate underwent a different finish. This year, they must have run out of inspiration, so they took a cask-strength version of Triple Wood. Since they had no doubts about its success, they bottled 36,000 copies.

Let's Taste It :
The nose is very similar to the diluted Triple Wood, with a dash of sherry between the tar and ash, but more woody. This gives it a slightly herbal flavour. The medicinal touch is there, of course. A wisp of smoke. On the palate, it's tasty, very red fruit and candy sugar, but quite peaty, and with spices to boot. Gooseberries, blackberries and rhubarb. Slight vanilla in the background. Very explosive finish. Leaves an aftertaste of charcoal and raspberry. Damp wood.

In Short,
It's very good, but I don't see what it adds compared to the diluted Triple Wood. At that price, they could have made the effort to blend something slightly different or older.

Let's Taste It :
Strong Port influence, with red plums, quinces, a hint of pastry and violets. The typical elements of the distillery are left to be desired. The peat does not impose itself, but maintains a certain balance. A bit of iodine behind. Slightly acidic, some charcoal grains. Woody influence. Oily and slightly maderised on the palate. Cherries in brandy. Apricot compote, tannins. Then a very explosive finish, fruit crumble and earth, quartz. Fermented damsons.

In Short,
It's an interesting, and even enjoyable experience. But I find that the distillery's hallmarks, which I'm particularly fond of, are somewhat sidelined with this release, where the port is predominant. What's more, the price is disproportionate.

This limited edition of 7,638 bottles was launched as part of Diageo Special Releases in 2014.

Let's Taste It :
Evanescent iodine. Then fruits, pear, greengage, an ounce of liquorice. Vanilla. All very woody, varnished, crushed quinces. Almost imperceptible smoke and peat. Slight acidity. Very syrupy on the palate, barley sugar, baked apples from the oven, braised caramel, dried figs, rising spices, cinnamon, a bit earthy, but it's nonetheless very sweet, almond paste, pastry cream, frosting. Quite a long finish, on prunes, vine leaves, chives, dried apricots. Clay, sun, sea foam.

In Short,
A superb blend, very fruity and complex, but I wasn't overwhelmed. Perhaps I missed something, or the sample wasn't of good quality. In any case, it all seemed to me a little overrated.

Launched on the occasion of Feis Ile 2019, Islay's annual music festival, this bottling has undergone an original ageing process, in sherry-treated American casks. 3000 bottles were put on sale.

Let's Taste It :
Iodine and peat dance together, wrapped in a light smoke, appetising white fruits, wood and dried banana. You can feel the sea air, you're far away, lost in the middle of the ocean. Finely refined salt, prawn fritters. Very sweet on the palate, very apple-vanilla, mirabelle plum and lemon, but soon enough the pepper and spices rise, coconut, to introduce an explosive and very long finish, with something pastry-like, nougat, turrón, almond, and an ounce of charcoal that chars, some earth to give depth. Egg yolk in retro-olfaction.

In Short,
A little gem, where the bourbon makes itself felt much more than the sherry. A must if you can afford it.

The main advantage of this bottling, launched in 2015, is that it is 46% ABV, which is not the case with Original Peaty. It may be slightly older too.

Let's Taste It :
First a light sea breeze, oysters, foam, kelp, sand, iodine. Then limestone peat. Well-balanced, boutargue, shellfish. Fairly fine smoke. Coarse salt, not at all refined. Sea breeze. Guano, cob, fuel oil. And, yes, it seems like a bit of vanilla. As well as liquorice wood. The palate, on the other hand, is very clear, with pepper gradually coming through. Vanilla heavy with peat. Short, punchy finish, charcoal, earth, but also iodised salt and fish scales. Caramel and aniseed in retro-olfaction. This bears a strong resemblance to Caol Ila, I can't imagine what else it could be.

In Short,
A very maritime nose and a pleasant style. A satisfying purchase, provided the price is right.
